Resolution to Recognize Three Mile Island's Contributions to the District

Whereas, the Lower Dauphin Board of School Directors recognizes the many contributions to the school community provided by the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County.

Whereas, the Board acknowledges Three Mile Island as one of the District’s largest employers and taxpayers.

Whereas, the District receives $700,000 in revenue via property taxes and payments in addition to taxes and additional funds from Three Mile Island’s employees in earned income taxes and other levies.

Whereas, the Board also acknowledges the many charitable contributions to the Lower Dauphin community, both in terms on monetary donations and in employee time.

Whereas, the Board further recognizes Three Mile Island will begin the process to close the plant on June 1, 2019.

And whereas, the Board wishes to express its concern about the devastating impact such a closure would have both on the District and the wider community.

Now therefore be it resolved, the Board encourages the General Assembly and Governor to work together to find a solution which will enable Three Mile Island to continue to operate and provide the numerous benefits it provides to our community.

And further, the Board directs the administration to forward a copy of this resolution to the Governor, state elected officials, and county commissioners and to the elected township boards of supervisors and borough council within the District.

And, the Board of School Directors directs that a copy of this document be made a part of the official minutes of the Lower Dauphin School District Board of School Directors meeting of 18 March 2019.
